Learning Logs Parent Student Connection Year Long Activities - Wise Guys - TeachersPayTeachers.com

Learning Logs Parent Student Connection Year Long Activities - Wise Guys - TeachersPayTeachers.com
Check out this great resource for students and parents to use at home to reinforce skills taught in class throughout the whole school year!

I have developed a unique program for my students to use at home to help practice facts and concepts learned in class. Each month the students take home their new learning logs with concepts from reading, math, social studies and grammar. Each log is attached to an empty roll of toilet paper and can be rolled up and kept in a ziploc bag. With each new month, students add onto their learning logs! By the end of the year, they have nine months of concepts that they have learned and practiced at home. Each log has 7 boxes at the bottom for the students to fill in each time they practice, and for the parents to initial before bringing back to school. The logs that I have created are geared toward 5th grade, but can easily be modified in Microsoft Word to fit grades 3-6.

Each log also has a parent answer key so parents know the answers too! This took a lot of time and effort to create, but the benefits to my students have paid off!

Your students, and parents, will love this! Watch their learning and achievement soar!

I have also included an introductory letter to send home as well.

The novel tells the story of a 12-year old boy named Tree-ear- an orphan who lives under a bridge with Crane-man in a small Korean village in the 12th Century. Tree-ear loves to watch Potter Min make his pottery. But one day when no one was around, Tree-ear decides to sneak into Min's work area for a closer look at his creations. There he finds many objects, but one object particularly catches his eye- an undecorated rectangular, lidded box. Out of curiosity, Tree-ear looks inside and discovers five smaller boxes, each fitting perfectly around the other. Potter Min shouts when he finds Tree-ear looking at the boxes. In fright, Tree-ear drops the box, breaking it. To repay the potter, Tree-ear has to work for the potter for nine days. Tree-ear’s work was to collect wood. Tree-ear is confused, for he secretly wants to make his own pot. After his work of nine days is complete, he offers to work for the potter for free in hopes of getting to make his own pot. Tree-ear is assigned various tasks but never has the chance to make his own pot. He eventually learns that Min will not teach him how to make a pot, due to the tradition of a potter teaching his own son. Min's son is dead. In the end, it is a single shard that changes the lives of many…

Tears Until Midnight original written work by Wise Guys 34 pages - Wise Guys - TeachersPayTeachers.com

Tears Until Midnight original written work by Wise Guys 34 pages - Wise Guys - TeachersPayTeachers.com

Tears Until Midnight by Wise Guys (original work)Comprehension Reading Activities Unit Common Core Reading Standards: 1,2,3,4,5,6.

34-Page Student Guide and answer key(10-page story, 9-page packet, 9-page answer key, 2-page game board, and other activities)

Tears Until Midnight is the original work of Wise Guys. This 10-page story (8 short chapters) is an emotional story between a 12-year old and an old man, Mr. Feaney. Mike Tooley has an essay to write about something he’s interested in. He needs someone to learn from. The only problem is the person he chooses to learn from wants nothing to do with him. To Mr. Feaney, Mike is just the kid who delivers his paper every morning at seven-thirty.

To most people around Tuckerville, Mr. Feaney seems unsocial, gruff, and just plain mean. Ever since his wife's passing he works in his garage. And every night at exactly seven o’clock he opens the squeaky garage door, grabs the newspaper, and grumbles back to his house. This short story is about hope, courage, and friendship.

Included in this guide is the 10-page story and a comprehension guide (with key) which focuses on specific reading strategies such as inferencing, making connections, visualizing, prediciting, extending the text, and many more.
Check out our store for more of our reading comprehension guides and packets. Also included is a game board, ideas for projects, and a vocabulary activity.

Please download the preview for the first part of the story and part of the comprehension guide and game board.

Do you want a creative way to get your students to read outside of school? We have developed fun monthly reading logs that will get your students excited to read at home. Iditarod Dog Sled Race Simulation Activity Southern Route - Wise Guys - TeachersPayTeachers.com

Iditarod Dog Sled Race Simulation Activity Southern Route - Wise Guys - TeachersPayTeachers.com
Iditarod Dog Sled Race Simulation Activity (Southern Route- Odd Numbered Years)

Common Core Math Standard: Number and Operation in Base Ten, Measurement and Data, Mathematical Processes; Common Core Reading Standards: 4

Get your students ready for the Iditarod sled dog race! This 30-page document is meant to simulate the Iditarod dog sled race. Students, with their teams of 12 to 16 dogs, will travel over some of the roughest, yet most beautiful terrain in Alaska- around jagged mountain ranges, frozen rivers, dense forests, and vast tundra. The approximate 1,150 mile trip will begin in Anchorage and end in Nome on the western Bering Sea coast.

To gain some background knowledge, the activity begins with a general discussion about the Iditarod race (history, mushers, vocabulary, etc.). Students are asked to fill out their “What do you really know about the Iditarod” sheets that are provided.

After the discussion, students are put into teams of 3-4 and are encouraged to come up with a name for their "musher team". Each musher team will begin in Anchorage, Alaska (the official start of the race) and “race” the other teams to Nome, Alaska. Teams will keep record of their times on the 4-page “Iditarod Time Tracker Log” (provided).

Since the goal of this activity is to simulate the Iditarod experience of the mushers and sled dogs, each team will begin their time log at 9 days and 3 hours and 16 minutes (which is based on the first place times over the past few years). However, throughout the “race” teams will need to add and subtract minutes based on events that they may encounter on the trail. Teams will use a die to move along the Iditarod Trail. As stated above, teams will need to keep track of their time on the “Iditarod Time Tracker Log”. The distance between each checkpoint determines how many rolls the teams will have.

The number on the die will determine what card they will pick. If a team rolls a 2 or 5, it must choose a “Sled Dog” card. These cards include situations that their sled dogs may encounter on the Iditarod Trail. Depending on the situation, teams may have to add or subtract time in their logs. If a team rolls a 3 or 6, it must choose a “Trail Encounter” card. These cards have certain situations that could occur to the team on the Iditarod Trail. Depending on the situation, teams may have to add or subtract time in their logs. If a team rolls a 1 or 4, it must choose a “Weather” card. These cards contain elements of weather that the team would face on the trail. Depending on the situation, teams may have to add or subtract time in their logs.

When a team reaches a checkpoint, it will need to pick a “Checkpoint Task” card which will contain a math, reading, research, or writing problem. The team will solve the problem and bring it to the teacher (answer key is provided). If the team gets the problem correct it will either require no mandatory rest time or just a small amount of rest. But if the team gets the problem wrong it will have to add time in their logs for mandatory rest.

Included in the packet is a matching vocabulary page and an optional page of activities for students to do, including having students design an IPod Touch that would be helpful on the trail.

In addition to the above, included at the end of the packet are "Super Challenge" cards that can be used for the upper levels to make adding and subtracting time more challenging.
