Cinco de Mayo Celebration! Activities and Ideas to Use in the Classroom

Cinco de Mayo is fast approaching, and I enjoy teaching my students about the Mexican culture and heritage on this day. I begin by telling my students the story behind Cinco de Mayo and the Battle of Puebla. From there, I have a short geography lesson about the differences in climate and geography of  the country of Mexico. We also listen to traditional Mexican music, enjoy Mexican cuisine from a local Mexican restaurant (that so graciously donates food every year), and do various activities that help teach the students some basic Spanish and more about the special day. Check out the activities below!

Here are some examples of the memory game sheets. The "red" lines underneath the words do not appear when you print.

Cinco de Mayo is a great way to introduce your students to the Mexican heritage and culture. If you have any students of Mexican heritage, it would be great to include them in the day as well if they would like. I have had students from Mexican heritage create Power Points about Cinco de Mayo, help teach the class words in Spanish, and even teach students songs! Enjoy!
