How to Use a Social Studies Textbook Beginning of Year Activity - Wise Guys - TeachersPayTeachers.com

How to Use a Social Studies Textbook Beginning of Year Activity - Wise Guys - TeachersPayTeachers.com

Many times teachers expect their students to know how to use a textbook. Because this is often taken for granted, many students never learn how to effectively use their social studies textbook as a resource.

This 5 page document will help students learn how to effectively use a textbook. Students will learn about: the table of contents, the glossary, the index, the reference section, how to find key vocabulary, the difference between units, chapters, and lessons, how to use pictures, diagrams and charts, and how to find information quickly.

This also includes an answer key and teacher rubric for assessment.

Start the year off right in social studies with this helpful activity!

Oregon Trail Simulation Activity: Become a traveler on the Trail.

NEW! We have created an Oregon Trail Simulation activity with lesson plans, resources, and worksheets in which students become travelers on the Oregon Trail!

This is a 34  page interactive lesson plan activity and game that will directly involve students in the Oregon Trail experience. Students begin their journey in Independence, Missouri by forming their wagon family. They then have to purchase supplies at the general store before leaving.

On their journey they are rolling dice to see what happens along the trail. They also have a food log they have to keep track of as well. Beware of the river crossings. They can be dangerous too. Students are actively involved and each wagon member has a specific job that s/he has to do in the process! Watch your students have a blast while trying to make it to the Oregon Territory before supplies run out or before something tragic happens.

The pages include an introductory scenario, a detailed lesson plan page for teachers to follow, pre-teaching activities, a vocabulary worksheet and so much more.

This packet also includes health, hunting, river crossing, and random events cards. An example of a hunting card would be: "You shot at a buffalo. If you roll a 5 then you got it and can add 200 pounds to your food supply. If you roll a 1, 2, 3, 4, or 6 then you missed. Subtract 6 bullets from your “Bullet Tracker” sheet also".

Included in the packet are some extra credit project choices (including an IPod Touch activity that would have been helpful on the trail).

This is a very comprehensive packet that could easily be adapted and used for math as well. This is an experience that my students have really enjoyed.
