Book Review and Lesson Plans and Activities for One Crazy Summer

This National Book Award Finalist is about three African American girls who travel across the United States to visit their mom in California who they haven’t seen in since they were very young. This story takes place during the 1960’s, a time when there was civil unrest in America. The girls arrive in Oakland to find their mom not thrilled with their presence. Their mom sends them off to a center where they find that it is a place where the Black Panthers gather. They basically learn to survive on their own, while their mom works on poetry in solitude in the kitchen. When their mother is arrested by the police, the girls fend for themselves and even gain some fame during a rally. This is a gripping story that will leave the reader wanting more!
